Squirt B wins State Championship

The Medfield Squirt B team qualified for the Massachusetts Hockey State Tournament by beating Dedham 6-5 in the State play-downs in December. The tournament opened with the Medfield facing Billerica on Friday night. Medfield pulled off a 6-0 win, with goals scored by Aaron Ravech (3), Matt Dickson (2), and Max Grzeskowiak.

With the first game under their belt, the Squirt Bs faced South Boston early Saturday morning. It was a fast-paced and gritty game. South Boston took an early lead with five goals and held Medfield to three goals until the third period. Goals were scored by Braeden Sutton (2), Ben Kramer (2), and Aaron Ravech. With 3:32 minutes left in the game, Medfield came out swinging, scoring an astonishing three goals in two minutes to tie the game. The goals came from Braeden Sutton, Aaron Ravech, and Ben Kramer. The teams proceeded into overtime, where they held each other off, leading to a shootout. Each team chose five players to shoot one-on-one on the goalie. While Medfield’s goalie Charlie Duggan stood tall and Max Grzeskowiak netted one in the shoot out, South Boston ended up clinching game two with a shootout win.

Saturday night brought game three, in which Medfield met North Central. The Squirt Bs fought hard and held off North Central in a 6-1 victory, landing them a spot in the quarterfinals.

Medfield ended up facing South Boston once again in their quarterfinal game on Sunday morning. Knowing it would be tough, Medfield geared up for a long battle. Both Medfield and South Boston played an incredible game, holding the score to 0-0 until the beginning of the third period when Braeden Sutton got Medfield on the board with a top corner shot. South Boston answered with only 4 minutes left in the third period, tying the game. With only one and a half minutes remaining, Medfield was able to grab one more goal with a shot by Braeden Sutton. Medfield won the game 2-1 and headed into the finals.

The Squirt B’s faced the undefeated WTM (Wilbraham Twin Meadows) team on Sunday night for the championship. The game was tight throughout, with Medfield exploding in the 3rd period with four goals in the last five minutes to earn the Squirt B MA State Title Tier III, Small Town. Goals were scored by Braden Sutton, Matt Dickson, Ben Kramer and Aaron Ravech.

The MYH Pee Wee A and B teams also made their respective state tournaments this weekend. The Pee Wee A team put on a great showing and Pee Wee B made it to the quarterfinals with a double-overtime loss. The girls U10 and U12 played in the Waterville Valley Deep Freeze, and the U10 team advanced to the finals, where they lost to a tough Weymouth team.
