The Melick Foundation was created in 1997 to honor Dick Melick, who served as Needham's Town Moderator for thirty-five years. In 2010, the Melick Foundation established an annual scholarship for a Needham High School senior who is an active community volunteer and has helped further the tradition of civic and neighborly service in the town of Needham.

This year's winner is Katherine "Katie" Mullen of Needham High School class of 2016. Katie was a Class Representative in student government for all four years at NHS. She participated in many activities including the Treble Rebels A Capella Group, peer tutoring, special ed classroom tutoring. She is also an American Red Cross volunteer, a Single Parent Support Group volunteer, and a member of the Own Your Peace Coalition. She received the Needham Youth Services/NBA "Ray of Hope" Award this past February and is a member of the NHS Honor Society. She received the St. Michael's College Book Award for Scholarship, Leadership and Community Service. Katie will attend Fairfield University in the Fall.
