Yoga Adventures at the WPL

The Westwood Public Library (WPL) hosted Yoga Adventures in the children’s room. The 45 minute yoga program, which was specifically geared for children between the ages of five and eight, guided kids through yoga poses in a fun and playful way.

Yoga Adventures was led by experienced yoga instructor Janet O’Donnell. Miss Janet, who typically teaches adults but has familiarity with teaching her own children, had a kind and calming presence that the kids seemed to love. They were invited to remove their shoes and participate at their own pace. The session included some breath work, as well as a variety of yoga poses that included tree, monkey, frog, butterfly and cobra. There was also a spirited game of red light, green light: yogi version.

“That was so fun!” a young girl exclaimed after the class. “I want to come again next time.”

The class contained several participants of various ages, though the library strongly recommends that children be at least five to attend. Yoga mats were provided for the children, and chairs in the back were for the caregivers, or they were free to wander around the library if they wished.

“It was a great group today,” Miss Janet said. “I really enjoyed it.”

Developed in ancient India, yoga has become a beloved practice worldwide. There are countless different schools, but many common goals include stilling the mind, increasing physical fitness, and reducing stress. Two significant benefits of yoga are that it can be modified to almost any age or fitness level and requires only a chair or mat, making it an affordable and accessible activity. In today’s fast-paced world, many are choosing yoga as a favorite exercise to incorporate into their workout routines.

WPL offers many programs for all ages. You can view the event calendar at WestwoodLibrary.org
