Foundation for Westwood Education announces grant recipients

At its May 11 board meeting, the Foundation for Westwood Education, a non-profit organization that helps to support educational projects and programs in Westwood, approved a number of grants for various educational programs and projects.

The Martha Jones School received a grant to fund a program exploring the music, art and dance of West Africa. The program, called “Crocodile River,” will feature a three-day program exploring the art of West Africa.

Westwood Winds received a grant to fund a special appearance by Ron Della Chiesa, of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, to perform in town with the Westwood Winds during its 2016 concert season.

Thurston Middle School received a grant to bring the Taylor’s Message program to the school. The lecture discussed risky teen behavior caused by drugs and alcohol.

Eighth grade teachers at Thurston Middle School also received a grant to bring professional engineers to the school to teach kids about applied algebra.

Westwood elementary schools and Thurston Middle School received a grant to purchase materials and run an after-school introductory video production class.

Finally, Westwood teaching staff received a grant to finance a four-day professional literacy training program by the Coaching of Reading Institute.

The Foundation for Westwood Education is still looking for members to join its board. Sponsoring these and many other initiatives takes money, generously donated year after year by Westwood residents and businesses. It also takes time.

The Foundation needs new members to help its all-volunteer board gather information about the needs of the community, ensure that it has the resources it needs to continue subsidizing programs, and make decisions about how funds should be distributed.

If you are interested in making connections within the town, meeting new people, and helping to keep Westwood the peaceful yet vibrant place it is, the board would love to have you join.
