A multi-vehicle crash involving a fuel spill caused significant disruption along Route 128 in Westwood early Thursday, May 1, snarling traffic during the morning commute and prompting an extensive emergency response, according to local news reports.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway near Exit 28. Authorities said a box truck collided with a tractor-trailer that had been positioned in the breakdown lane, resulting in severe damage to the vehicles and a spill of fuel across multiple lanes.
Emergency crews, including state police and firefighters, responded quickly to the scene. At least one driver sustained serious injuries, though the full extent of injuries remains under investigation.
As a result of the crash, two right lanes were shut down for several hours while crews worked to remove the damaged trucks and contain the hazardous fuel spill. Cleanup operations extended into the early morning, contributing to heavy traffic delays along Route 128 and affecting commuters throughout the region.
Officials said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Motorists were urged to seek alternate routes as authorities continued cleanup and safety assessments at the scene throughout the morning.
