The Westwood Public Library held a card-making craft session on September 19. The afternoon recognized Thinking of You Week, an international celebration of sending handmade greeting cards and notes.
Reference Librarian Corinne Coveney guided crafters to a table with a plethora of materials to choose from. Crafters selected from the variety of cardstock, colored pencils, and paint to create a sentimental piece of artwork for friends and loved ones. Coveney also had the benefit of a Cricut machine, a coveted crafter’s tool that makes any project easier, for cutting seasonal and custom shapes into card-stock.
Coveney emphasized the message of sharing sentimental moments with others: “I like that idea of having a time to write to someone and say ‘I was thinking of you and wanted to send you a card.’”
Some opted for painting a window scene, using watercolors to create a picturesque vista or sweet autumn view; when paired with the Cricut cutout of a window, the additional dimension added an extra element to the artwork. Others incorporated string that held a banner across the card for a message like “happy fall” or “thinking of you.” Both designs were great jumping-off points to get inspirational sparks flying.
“I wanted to give adults a chance to have fun and be creative,” Coveney observed. “Sometimes people don’t necessarily know how to let their creativity out, so I want to give everybody a chance to play around, use color. Kids get a lot of craft time, and I want everybody to have that.”
The easygoing vibe of the afternoon presented a perfect opportunity for folks to unwind and connect with their imaginative sides.
