Westwood Recreation recently held their Annual Westwood Fishing Derby. This event was held over at Buckmaster Pond in which everyone was welcome to participate.
For this fishing derby, there were two divisions participants could enter into. The Youth Division was for children 15 years old and under, they had a free entry fee and lots of prizes to win. The Adult Division was for those 16 years old and older, there was a $10 entry fee, and a cash prize to win at the end.
In addition to prizes, Westwood Rec also had worms available as bait for everyone to use. These were completely free of charge and there was no limit on how many people could take.
Right next to the Westwood Rec booth, Troop 3 Westwood also had their own booth set up. They are chartered by the Boston Area Spirit of Adventure Council of the Boy Scouts of America and sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Westwood, MA. These boys went around lending a helping hand to those who needed it.
Attendees could be seen at all corners of Buckmaster Pond, eager to reel in as many fish as they could. Throughout the morning, Pike, Bass, Sunfish, and Bluegill were among the most popular fish that were reeled in.
If any participants wanted to take a quick break from fishing in the pond, Westwood Rec had set up a fun little target game in front of their booth. Everyone would take turns casting a fishing rod towards one of the hula hoops that were placed on the ground about three to six feet away. Westwood Rec Assistant Director Sue Perry and Program Manager Joe Bertone were there lending a helping hand with this activity.
This year’s winners of the Fishing Derby were Brynn Laramie for the Youth Division and Joseph Salcedo for the Adult Division. Laramie caught a 1 pound 4 ounce Pike and Salcedo caught a 2 pound 10 ounce Pike. Congratulations to all those who participated in this amazing derby!
