On Saturday April 30, Westwood Little League held their annual parade. All of the kids and their families walked to the ribbon cutting ceremony at Deerfield Park located at Deerfield School.
The town of Westwood has worked very hard to fundraise and remodel the field for the children.
The ceremony began with the National Anthem, which was sung by four seventh and eighth grade girls from Westwood. For the Anthem, a giant flag hanging from a crane was used.
At the end of the song, the crowd erupted in cheers and the little league players all threw their hats into the air.
Selectman Michael Walsh then came before the crowd. He thanked the crowd and everyone who made this new field possible. Walsh believes that this field now reflects the community’s commitment to youth, sports and recreation.
“We have brought this play area to a condition the town of Westwood can be proud of,” Walsh said just before cutting the ribbon to officially open the field.
Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, Selectman Patrick Ahearn threw the ceremonious first pitch to special guest Wally from the Boston Red Sox. Ahearn has been on the Board of Selectmen for the past 18 years and will be retiring this year. Everyone at the ceremony was happy to be a part of honoring this man before his retirement.
The ceremony concluded by having the fourteen top fundraisers come onto the field. These young boys were gifted with tickets to see a Red Sox game and the opportunity to stand on the field with the team during the National Anthem. The town also obtained 100 other tickets to the game, which other little league players are able to buy for $10 a piece.
After the official ceremony, attendees were invited to participate in activities such as a pitching statement and face painting. Food and beverages were sold as well. Following the ceremony, a girls softball scrimmage was set to be played on the field.
