Crafting community at the WPL

It’s no secret that friendship bracelets have become super popular over the past year, thanks largely to Taylor Swift and her fans passing them out on tour dates. The Westwood Library chose to use this popularity to bring people in for “Beads and Beats,” a jewelry-making event.

This was the library's first attempt at such an event, and it brought in a small group of people to create and share bracelets. Hosted in the children's programming room, children ages 10 and up were invited to make whatever their hearts desired. With access to countless beads and strings, everyone set off crafting. There was no limit to what people could make, uncovering earring posts and necklace clasps.

Taylor Swift's extensive discography served as the soundtrack for the evening and the inspiration for many designs. A few attendees shared stories of bracelets they made or received when Swift was in the area last summer. This sparked conversations about music, concerts, and who in the room was attending upcoming shows.

Everyone in the room was making bracelets, including the parents. The adults mainly helped the younger participants tie bracelets while making their own at the same time. Once everyone settled in, the conversation grew quickly. Many realized they were in the same grades or schools and started talking about their plans for the school year. The room filled with laughter as tips and tricks for making bracelets were swapped, and excitement for the next event grew.

The librarians occasionally passed through the room to check if anyone needed specific supplies. Overall, the event was patron-run, which worked really well. Enough participants had knowledge of jewelry making to help others out, ensuring everyone left with new bracelets.

The Westwood Library plans to host more jewelry-making events throughout the summer and school year. These small crafting opportunities bring in the community and connect people in countless ways. Bracelets are for all ages, and everyone enjoyed making them and the company around them.
