On Thursday October 13, the Wellesley High School Volleyball team will play a special game at 4:00 p.m. in the WHS gymnasium in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is the fifth year the Raiders volleyball team has joined together with www.Side-Out.org in raising funds for stage 4 breast cancer clinical trials. Stage 4 is the most advanced form of the disease and least-funded area of research. At the game, spectators can help the fundraising efforts by purchasing limited edition Raiders Dig Pink t-shirts for $10, snacks and beverages at the concession stand, and 50/50 raffle tickets at $5 per chance or five chances for $20.
Last year, the Raiders raised over $5,000, one of only 27 “Hard Hitting” schools in the US to reach that goal. This year’s team, led by captains Lindsay Canaday, Olivia Kisiday, and Meagan Krueger, hope to meet or exceed the $5,000 mark. Most of the 44 members of the varsity, JV, and freshman squads are motivated to participate in this fundraising event each year because they personally have a loved one affected by breast cancer.
In volleyball, “side-out” means to regain control of the ball; thus, the Side-Out organization hopes to help people with breast cancer regain control of their lives by providing needed funds for more research.
