Last week, the WHS Drama Society under the direction of Mr. Stephen Wrobleski performed three sold out shows of “Godspell” in the Little Theater. This represented the second year in a row that the Drama Society had presented a smaller musical production.

“The spring musical provides an excellent opportunity for students to work on fantastic musical pieces in our Little Theater,” said Wrobleski. “With pieces too small to be performed for our big fall musical, it allows me to highlight some of the incredible talent at Wellesley High School.” The group chose to perform a modernized version of “Godspell” that was revived in 2012, replacing the 1970s folk feel with a stronger rock feel.

The performance in the Little Theater provided the audience with an immersive experience. The sparse set was the platform for the many talented actors that got to perform directly to the audience at their feet. When Jackie sang the familiar hit, “Day by Day,” the audience was drawn into the moment as the lighting further enhanced the intimate feel. The show, performed as a series of parables from the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, with the Passion of Christ woven into the second act, gave each cast member a moment to shine in the spotlight.

Mr. Wrobleski wanted to thank the many people who helped behind the scenes, without whom the production would not have been possible. He thanked his colleagues, the custodial staff, and the WHS administration for their support as well as Wellesley Bank Charitable Foundation that supported this year’s drama season.

The next chance to see these talented actors will be at the performance of “The Complete History of America Abridged,” on June 2 and June 4 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theater at Wellesley High School.
