On the afternoon of February 12, as the snow was softly falling, a brave group of library patrons ventured out for an hour of chamber music. Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments.
The Wellesley Chamber Players are a collective of students and alumni from New England Conservatory who hope to bring a “vibrant and dynamic classical music scene” to Wellesley. Founded by Jayoung Kim in 2015, the group started its second season together, performing an intimate concert in the Wakelin room of the Wellesley Free Library. The trio of musicians included Kim at piano, Jonathan Butler at cello and Daniel Koo on violin. They played two pieces, each in three parts. The first was Beethoven Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70, No. 1 “Ghost.” The second piece was Schumann Piano Trio in D minor, No. 1 in D minor, Op. 63.
Kim, Butler, and Koo all have lengthy and impressive resumes, and their bios extol their skills and accomplishments. The talented trio played together flawlessly, their individual expertise complimenting each other. For an hour on a snowy Sunday afternoon, attendees drawn by a common appreciation for chamber music enjoyed the performance that at times was mournful and stormy, and at other moments playful, providing a lovely respite from the cold blustery day. The group’s next performance is Sunday, March 5, at 3:00 p.m. in Beveridge Hall at Dana Hall School.
The free event was sponsored by the Friends of Wellesley Free Libraries, an organization that supports library programs for children and adults through memberships and book sales. For future events, visit www.friendsofwellesleyfreelibraries.org.
