The Wellesley Town Band will present its annual winter concert on Sunday, December 17, at 3:00 in the Wellesley High School auditorium.
The current band began life five years ago as a group of 13 musicians under the direction of Henry Platt, then the director of bands in the Wellesley Middle School. Although retired from his day job, Henry continues to lead the Town Band, which has more than tripled to 45 members from 13 communities, some as distant as Sudbury and Hopkinton. The instrumentalists range in age from 15 to 81 and include players of all abilities, from professional musicians to those who just enjoy playing challenging music with others. The band gives four to six concerts a year, and once in a while sections of the band play for special occasions. The Wellesley Town Band represents a truly all-inclusive community activity.
This year’s winter concert features “Pageant,” with its surprise ending by Philadelphia’s own Vincent Persichetti, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ band composition, “Sea Songs.” Also included is a trip down memory lane with the Beatles, a couple of holiday classics, and, of course, a rousing band march to get toes tapping. As always, the concert is free and refreshments will be served.
