Frances Bacon once said: “In charity, there is no excess.”
WHS Visual Art Specialist Amie Larson is putting this sentiment into practice by organizing the Empty Bowls Banquet for the second year, on November 20 from 5-7 p.m. in the WHS cafeteria.
The announcement for the event, created by Wellesley Parents Supporting Art Students (WPSAS) reads: “Give back with gratitude and warming bowls of soup. Join Wellesley High School honors ceramics students for the 2nd annual Empty Bowls Banquet."
Larson said she was at a national ceramics conference (NCECA) three years ago when she first heard about Empty Bowls. "Sometimes,” she said, “high school students don't see the connection of their passion for art and the rest of life. This seemed like a way to highlight their talent while also doing something worthwhile to give back." Larson's students, in particular those from her ceramics intensive class, which she fondly dubs the "varsity ceramics" team, now design art specifically for this event as part of their overall portfolio for the class.
Doing so gives the community a chance to view and purchase their one-of-a-kind ceramics, all to support the prevention of hunger.
“[The banquet] brought families in to the high school for a family meal, and there was a real community feel,” said Margaret Petrovich, last year’s WPSAS co-president. “The music, food and atmosphere was excellent - everyone having a great time for a great cause. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful bowls created by the intensive ceramics students.”
WPSAS is hoping to see many members from the Wellesley community at this year’s event.
Empty Bowls is a national grassroots movement to help end hunger. Proceeds will be donated to Rosie’s Place in Boston. Each $20 ticket includes a buffet soup dinner and a handmade ceramic bowl. Live music will be provided by RipChord Gang, a local Wellesley band. This event is organized by the ceramics intensive students and co-hosted by WPSAS and it's co-presidents, Nina Pascale and Carol Hildebrand.
