Walpole’s July heat just short of all time record

After a cool and cloudy weekend on the 9th and 10th, when the temperature did not get out of the 60’s, it turned hot. The average temperature for the month of 75.3°, which was 2.8° above normal, tied for the fifth warmest July of record. The average daily maximum for the last twenty days of the month was 90.0°, with a two week stretch during that period averaging 92.0° each day. Eleven days reached 90°, including 8 consecutive days from the 21st through the 28th. This is one day short of the all time record of nine days in August 2002. The high temperature for the month was 96°, on the 22nd, 23rd, and the 25th. The low was 54°, on the 3rd and the 20th. Of all the heat noted, the only daily record set was a new minimum high temperature of 66°, on the 9th. July was very dry, with only 1.16 inches of rain. The June and July total of 2.74 inches is the lowest for those two months since 2.40 inches in 1997. The twenty five days after the 6th of the month saw only 0.30 inches of rain. Within that period was a seventeen day stretch with only 0.05 inches of precipitation.
