Thousands of jubilant guests flocked to Boylston Schul-Verein (BSV), the German-American Club located on Route 109 in Walpole, the first weekend of the month. They were there to celebrate the club’s annual Sommerfest, a summer extravaganza that included traditional German fare, music, and drink, as well as a shopping market, game and picnic area, and playground. Hungry guests could enjoy beloved classics such as schnitzel, bratwurst, leberkase, and currywurst, or choose more local favorites like hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries. Also on the menu were a number of beers; many of them German, of course, as well as waffles, lemonade, a variety of soft drinks, pierogis, and a selection of mouthwatering baked goods.
In addition to the food, there was a game section that featured tug of war, archery, target practice, corn hole, and water balloons. There was also live music from Die lustigen Almdudler, a folk group that really knew how to get the crowd going! Attendees could also squeeze in some shopping at the Sommerfest Marketplace, which had vendors selling German and European decorative items, beer steins, hats, jewelry and more.
“I think this is the most crowded I’ve ever seen it,” said one performer, dressed in traditional German clothing. “The parking lots filled up quickly. We’re going to have the best day!”
Known as one of the largest and oldest German-American clubs in the area, BSV began as a teaching facility for children in 1874. It has been at its current location since 1976 and, while still serving as a language school, has branched out to encompass a number of cultural and social activities, such as Sommerfest. They are now celebrating their 150th club anniversary!
“It is important to us that the whole family can come and we have activities for all ages levels,” said Angela DeMartino, President of BSV. “Bringing the community and friends and families together is our goal.”
