Once again, Troop 44 Walpole has climbed one of the 48 4,000 foot mountains of New Hampshire. This is the sixth year Troop 44 has participated in this event, known as Flags on the 48. This event began on September 15, 2001, when six hikers ascended Mt. Liberty in order to express their grief for the lives that were lost in the horrific terrorist attacks on September 11. Every year since, around September 11, hikers from all around work together to climb all 48 4,000+ foot mountains and fly the American flag from noon to 2:00 in order to remember those lost on September 11.
The scouts began their ascent of the 4,052 foot Mt. Jackson at 8:00 with a chill in the air and spirits high with anticipation. The trail was slick and muddy from a rain shower that had moved through the previous night, but the scouts were undeterred. It took over three hours for the scouts - most of whom were carrying 40+ pound backpacks so that they could stay overnight at the Mizpah Spring tent site - to reach the top of the mountain. Once the scouts reached the top, the American flag was raised at noon to honor those lost in the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. At the summit, the scouts lead a memorial service for all hikers present to participate in. Shortly after the service, a military helicopter flew over the top of the mountain, and the servicemen inside the helicopter saluted Troop 44’s flag.
It was truly a memorable hike for Troop 44, and they look forward to participating in this event next year.
