Walpole voters nominated Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders to be presidential nominees during the March 1 Massachusetts presidential primary.
A total of 8,300 of Walpole’s 17,163 registered voters participated in this year’s presidential primary.
Republican front-runner Donald Trump took both Walpole and the Massachusetts nomination with a large lead. He picked up 1,805 or 45.11 percent of the total votes in Walpole. Marco Rubio finished in second place with 844, or 21.09 percent of Walpole votes, and John Kasich came in third with 810 or 20.24 percent of Walpole votes.
Statewide, Trump achieved a similar lead overall, picking up 49.3 percent of the Massachusetts vote and 22 of the state’s available delegates. John Kasich came in second with 18 percent of the state vote and 8 delegates.
On the Democratic side, a much tighter race ended with a win for Bernie Sanders in Walpole. Sanders picked up 2,098 votes, or 49.24 percent of the vote. Hillary Clinton came in second with 2,066 votes, or 48.49 percent of the vote.
Sanders was not able to replicate his Walpole win statewide, as he fell to Hillary Clinton. Clinton picked up the win with 50.1 percent of the vote, while Bernie Sanders finished second with 48.7 percent of the vote.
Clinton picked up 46 delegates, while Sanders claimed 45 delegates.
