Last Friday, seniors were welcomed to travel back in time and enjoy an afternoon in the 50s! The Junior Women’s Club of Walpole (JWCW) and the Council on Aging (COA) teamed up to host an Ice Cream Social for local seniors to enjoy a sweet treat, a musical performance, and the company of their friends before the busy holiday week ahead of them.
It was abnormally warm for a Friday in mid-November, making this afternoon an exceptionally one to enjoy a cold treat! The line of seniors weaved through the common room as everyone eagerly awaited their ice cream sundaes! The JWCW worked hard to create sundaes to cater to the individual taste buds of each senior that passed through. The JWCW provided a variety of ice cream flavors, including the classics such as chocolate and vanilla, as well as providing a plethora of toppings, including hot fudge, caramel sauce, whipped cream, cherries, and jimmies! Each senior left the buffet style ice cream bar with a smile on their faces.
“The Junior Women’s Club came in here like the calvary with ice cream and helping hands, it should be a wonderful event today!” Kerri McManama remarked as everyone was heading into the event. McManama went on to share that the COA had decorated the center for the event, but the JWCW provided the ice cream for all of the seniors to enjoy.
COA staff members dressed up in 50s style outfits which contributed to the playful, 50s themed atmosphere at the South Street Center.
While the seniors either awaited their sundaes or sat amongst friends to enjoy their sweet treat, the musical stylings of the Retro Polatin Duo filled the air with their covers of 50s hits. The duo played popular tunes such as “It’s Now or Never” by Elvis Presley and “Rock Around The Clock” by Bill Haley and His Comets, which was a fitting tune as everyone was transported back to the 1950s for this event. There was a wonderful turn out as each and every table was packed. All of the seniors left with smiles on their faces. It was safe to say that everyone in attendance was grateful for the JWCW for sponsoring this event.
