On a brisk evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon at Westwood High turf, the Dover-Sherborn boys' soccer team made their way to face the formidable Wolverines.
As the temperature dropped, the bundled-up crowd rallied behind the Wolverines, cheering them on as they engaged in a hard-fought battle and ultimately celebrated a well-deserved 2-0 victory.
The first half commenced with the piercing sound of the whistle echoing throughout the stadium, propelling the boys into a sprint across the field. Despite facing a resilient Raiders team, the Wolverines managed to break through Dover-Sherborn's defense, securing a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Raiders surged onto the field with electrifying energy, creating several scoring opportunities. However, they found themselves up against the formidable Alan Frerichs, an exceptional goalkeeper who delivered an outstanding performance. Frerichs, in the zone, blocked shot after shot, thwarting the Raiders' offense at every turn. The Wolverines seized another opportunity to breach the Raiders' defense, extending their lead on the scoreboard.
Head coach Rick Beidleman expressed his admiration for the players' remarkable efforts throughout the evening.
“Alan was absolutely amazing, the man of the match really goes to him tonight, he had three really big saves that kept us in the game,” said Beidleman.
As the final whistle echoed through the stadium, signaling the conclusion of the evening's match, the boys came together to wrap up the game and exchanged handshakes with their opponents. They then joined the enthusiastic fans in celebrating the night's events. Head coach Beidleman expressed his satisfaction with the boys' performance, highlighting the exemplary leadership provided by the seniors, who have dedicated themselves to reaching this point in the season through their hard work and commitment.
“We knew they were one of the top seeds in division three, they always come ready to play against, and they are very technical. Our boys really stepped it up, they did a wonderful job with great goalkeeping too. We ran through the middle, held good possession, did the things on the field that we wanted to do, and we stayed calm towards the end. Every game is tough in the Tri-Valley League, nobody wins more than a goal. It’s on to Medway, which is a very competitive team. The seniors have brought really great leadership, they are able to step up and motivate their younger teammates,” said Beidleman.
The boys will travel next to Bellingham High on Thursday, October 12th to start at 4:15 p.m.
