The Westwood High School football team celebrated Westwood Day 2023 in style on Friday night, picking up a dominant 35-14 victory over visiting Quincy before welcoming fans onto the field for postgame fireworks.
After suffering from a slow start a week earlier against Bellingham, the Westwood offense wasted no time getting on the board on Friday night. Working from an inverted wishbone formation, the Wolverines gained chunk yardage to put the ball on the one-yard line. A host of Westwood players helped push Dante Martucci across the goal line for the game’s opening score.
A tipped punt on the opening play of the second quarter set Westwood up inside the Quincy 20-yard line. The first play of the ensuing drive saw Devin Hunt air out a deep ball, connecting with Thomas Warren in the back corner of the end zone to put the Wolverines up by two scores, 14-0.
With their defense continuing to make stops, the Wolverines utilized Martucci to move the ball upfield. From inside the 10-yard line, the back bowled through the Quincy defense for another short touchdown, extendind the lead to 21-0.
Playing with a three-score lead and looking to add more, the Wolverines got tricky with their playcalling on the ensuing drive. Facing third and long from the Quincy 14-yard line, Hunt got the entire defense to bite by looking the way of Jack Crowley on a screen route before dropping the ball into the hands of a wide-open Charlie Toole in the end zone.
Following a Quincy turnover on downs, Hunt put the finishing touches on his best performance of the season. The quarterback found Andrew Weeman on a slant route and let his receiver do the rest, dicing up the defense for the Wolverines fifth touchdown of the night.
Facing defensive replacements, the Quincy offense was able to put together a pair of scoring drives. The damage, however, was more than done as the Wolverines finished off the night with a 35-14 victory.
Westwood head coach Brad Pindel was unavailable for comment following the victory as hundreds of fans stormed the field after the final horn to get the best spot to view the fireworks put on by the town. Players and spectators gathered together for a special night of celebration in Westwood.
