On Friday, January 3, the Westwood Wolverines Boys Basketball team faced the Hopkinton Hillers in a thrilling matchup that unfortunately spelled defeat for the Wolverines, as Hopkinton pulled ahead for an 83-75 win in overtime.

Last season, Westwood narrowly lost the Tri-Valley Large league championship to Hopkinton, fueling an intense rivalry. Westwood entered with a 3-2 record after a dominant win against Holliston, while Hopkinton came in at 3-1. The game promised to be tense and unpredictable, and it delivered.

In the first quarter, Westwood guard Robert Liriano-Alejandro scored 6 of his 22 points, while captain Matthew Preti provided lockdown defense. Despite their efforts, turnovers allowed Hopkinton to capitalize, ending the quarter up 21-16. Westwood roared back in the second quarter to take a 23-22 lead. However, after a technical foul sidelined Liriano-Alejandro, Hopkinton went on a run, building a 36-28 advantage. Westwood responded with resilience, cutting the deficit to 40-39 by halftime.

The third quarter showcased Westwood's defensive prowess. Blocks, rebounds, and clutch plays kept the score close, with Hopkinton leading 54-52 late. A strong take by Eli Ifrah tied the game at 55, but Hopkinton ended the quarter up 57-55.

The fourth quarter was electrifying. Westwood surged ahead 63-59 with key three-pointers but couldn't hold the lead. A late foul on Westwood gave Hopkinton free throws, but the Wolverines' boisterous crowd caused both to be missed. Liriano-Alejandro attempted a game-winning layup but was fouled with no call, sending the tied game (67-67) into overtime.

In overtime, Hopkinton's stamina proved decisive. Despite a clutch three-pointer by Preti, Hopkinton pulled ahead for an 83-75 win, handing Westwood its first home loss. The Wolverines showed grit and determination throughout, setting the stage for a promising season.
