The Westwood High boys varsity lacrosse team, reigning co-champions of the TVL, opened up their 2019 season on Friday afternoon at Flahive Field against Ashland.
In a dominant all-around performance from start to finish, the Wolverines took out the Clockers, 17-6, to start the year on a positive note.
Senior attack-man Ryan Healey notched the first goal of the season with 10:38 to play in the opening quarter with a dodge from X and a finish down low with the left hand. Fellow senior attack-man Conor Donohue got in on the action by netting back-to-back goals just 57 seconds apart to give Westwood a 3-0 lead. Healey would add another to give Westwood a 4-0 lead, followed by two more from Donohue to extend the lead to 6-0 at the end of one quarter.
Junior fogo/midfielder Charlie Harrington launched home a step-down cannon just 20 seconds into the second quarter on the man-up to make it a 7-0 game. With 9:49 to play in the half, Owen Gaffney burst through the box and finished at the crease with a bounce shot to make it an 8-0 game. Harrington added his second of the day with a riffle upstairs following a face-off win to make it 9-0. Justin O’Dwyer put home a quick stick at the crease to make it 10-0 and the Wolverines would take a 12-goal lead into halftime.
The second half saw two more goals from O’Dwyer, as well as a pair coming from Shea McCusker. Westwood kept its foot on the gas and prevailed with the convincing 16-7 win.
Westwood will travel to Hopkinton on April 12.
