On Monday, March 31 the Westwood Wolverines Boys Lacrosse team played an intense, and down to the wire, matchup against the Walpole Timberwolves. Although at the final whistle the score showed 9-10 with Walpole securing the win, Westwood left everything they had on the field.
Westwood started with an early 2-0 lead, both goals coming from senior captain Troy Fredrickson. The first, in the early moments of the game he powered up a 15 yard shot, and launched it right past the goalie. The 2nd came from a nice spin move, leaving him one-on-one with the goalie, easily, he slipped the ball right by him. Despite the result Troy Fredirickson played phenomenally, with a handful of goals. Fredirickson, along with others, kept Westwood in the fight. Unfortunately, Westwood couldn't hold onto the lead, as Walpole scored four unanswered goals, against a well-rounded Wolverines defense. Walople’s strong defense and stronger offense helped them to the 1st quarter victory 4-2.
Sophomore Will Sesselman was not going to let Walpole get off easy, as he fired his own 15 yard bounce shot, scoring, to get Westwood within one. But for every Westwood goal, Walpole responded with their own, making the score 5-3. Right before the half, senior captain Jack Roycroft made a great bar-down shot right before the buzzer, making the score 5-3 before the 3rd quarter.
The 3rd quarter was tense, and a setup for the even more tense 4th quarter. To start, Troy Fredrickson answered a Walpole goal with his own making the score 5-6, Walpole in front with 3 minutes left. Following that, Jack Roycroft converted a shot, the score was tied at 6. Towards the end of the quarter Walpole took the lead, the Wolverines hoping to tie the game in the 4th prepared themselves, but junior Liam Williams was ready to tie it right then. A last minute goal brought the score 7-7 entering the 4th.
In the fourth quarter, Walpole took the lead early, with 8 minutes left they were leading 8-7, and a great save by Goalie Jaden Pollack kept Westwood in it. Another amazing goal by Liam Williams tied it up. His game, especially in the 2nd half was nothing short of spectacular. Points by both teams brought the score to 8-9, Walpole in front, but an extremely clutch shot by Jack Rycroft tied the game at 9:00. But the Walpole offense was too powerful; as they scored within the last two points and Westwood couldn't find an answer.
