In a profound loss, 8-2, to the Medway Mustangs, the Westwood Wolverines struggled on both ends of the field, but as good players come and go, their relentless drive and endless potential will never leave them. Even with a disappointing result, the Wolverines never once gave up, never once thought of relaxing, displaying their continued hunger to play.
For the first few innings, senior Luke Chandler was on the mound. Chandler, renowned for his high velocity, threw six strikeouts, and only one earned run in six innings. His play has been tremendous this season, continuously pitching with a low earned runs average. Along with Chandler, the entire Westwood pitching rotation has been phenomenal, recently on Friday the 2nd, freshman Ryan Petres was able to pitch a shutout with 10 strikeouts. Taking Chandler off the mound was senior Charlie Martin who has provided great relief in close games, always giving Westwood that much needed momentum boost.
On the offensive side, Medway just got the best of Westwood, as they weren't able to find the gaps and send the ball long. As for the Wolverines two runs scored, a big double from senior Sean Blomquist put him in scoring position while a precise hit from Chase Warren earned him the RbI and the Wolverines the run. Late in the 6th inning, senior Danny Leahy took himself to first base and then a sacrifice fly was able to send him home.
Ultimately, Medways muscle was able to out score Westwood, and the Mustangs just found the Wolverines on a lucky day. Later in that week, the Wolverines were looking for redemption. They defeated Bellingham in an astonishing 13-1 finish with a home run coming from captain Drew Donnegan. On Friday, Westwood defeated Norton 10-0, and bedsides from Petres’s great pitching, freshman Teddy McGowan went 3-4 on the plate and sophomore Brendan Cengic went 2-3.
All in all a good week for baseball, despite a rough loss on Monday. The Wolverines bounced back and took their season record to 6-4. Hoping to earn a spot in the MIAA division 2 playoffs the boys will have to win a few more games, but they certainly have enough great hitters and pitchers to do so.
