In his essay, “The Green Fields of the Mind,” former Major League Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti said: “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone.”
The glorious run of Wellesley South has ended on the year, but there are no broken hearts in its wake. Bonds of friendship and camaraderie, perhaps. The pride of an entire town, certainly. Memories to last a lifetime? You bet.
A state title saw South vault into the New England Regionals, the winner of which would proceed to Williamsport and the Little League World Series. After winning its first game, 10-0 via mercy rule against Bedford, NH, Wellesley awaited a matchup with Rhode Island champions Warwick North.
They were stunned with a walk-off grand slam by their southern neighbors, dropping in the sixth inning to a Warwick team that would eventually win the tournament.
An elimination game followed as Wellesley took on Connecticut champions Fairfield. The CT boys, buttressed by their well-rested ace pitcher, took the game, 11-0, ending South’s Williamsport dreams.
Hometown Weekly would like to congratulate the boys of Wellesley South for giving their community something for which to cheer over the summer, not to mention a shining example of teamwork, guts, and grace in both victory and defeat.
