Walpole’s girls varsity ice hockey Timberwolves took the ice against the visiting Needham
Rockets at Rodman Arena on Saturday, February 11. As the teams went back and forth each
period, the match-up closed in a tie of 0-0.
As the first period began, the Timberwolves held strong over the Rockets, denying all of their
scoring attempts. The girls launched passes toward each other, connecting to get shots off the
Rockets’ net.
By the second and third periods, the Timberwolves gained more energy on the ice and held an
even stronger defense against the Rockets’ offensive barrage. Making a change in speed and
resistance, the Timberwolves came back with more fire under their skates in the second and
third periods heading into overtime, but could not find a winning goal.
Senior captain goalie Maddie Clark, however, refused to allow the Rockets to score, saving
every shot flung her way.
“Needham did a very good job putting pressure on me,” said Clark. “They were making cuts in
front of the net and screening me. At the end of the day, though, our defense stepped up and
put it away. I think we rose to the challenge of their offense.”
Co-coaches Mike Roof and Bob England are proud of the Timberwolves’ growth throughout the
season so far.
With a few more games left in the season, at the time of print, the Timberwolves head to
Braintree for an evening competition on Wednesday, February 15.
“We’re a young team,” said Roof. “The best thing is that they don’t quit. They put up a great
battle today, and as they get older and more experienced the more confident they are.”
