All it takes is one goal to whip past the defense to score the winning goal. Needham traveled to Walpole High on Thursday, May 11th where they battled a one goal game throughout the competition.
Needham slipped past Walpole’s defense to earn their winning shot, with only a few minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Rockets capitalized with a final score of 9-8 against the hosting Timberwolves.
With a brief moment of spring rain, the lacrosse boys didn’t let it get to the best of them. Both teams trekked on, and soon the skies would clear once more. By the second half, the boys battled back and forth in offensive zones, Needham sought out the perfect moment to strike for gold before knocking in their last goal of the evening. The Rocket’s Sean Reilly earned the most goals of the competition as he launched in 4 goals to add to the tally of Needham’s final score.
Head coach Dave Wainwright was pleased to see the heat of the competition, and that his boys advanced in such a close match.
“We know that these guys are very technically sound, we knew we had to be composed. At times we did that, at times we didn’t it can be chaotic in a game. Although we got the final goal to be on top which we are very happy about,” said Wainwright.
Needham will take on Weymouth at home on May 25th, face off is set to begin at 7 pm.
“We will be working on our short stick defense, they definitely attacked our short stick midfielders they isolated which was bold and a smart move. Walpole is a very well-coached and well-prepared team, we need to learn from those challenges,” said Wainwright.
