Needham High School will be sending four of its skiers to the 2017 MIAA State Championship Meet at Wachusett Mountain on Tuesday, March 7. This coming after the Rocket boys ski team finished third in the East Ski League (ESL) Championship Meet last weekend while the girls finished in fifth.

Senior captain of the lady-Rockets, Sophia Kurd, will be taking part in her fourth State Championship Meet following her sixth place finish at the ESLs. Upon her graduation from NHS this spring, Kurd will attend Boston University in the fall, where she plans to try out for the Terrier ski team.

Junior Josh Arvin placed fourth at the ESLs for Needham and qualified for States for the third consecutive year. Arvin also took home first place in the Slalom/Giant Slalom race at the AJ McEachern Memorial event at Ragged Mountain on February 4.

Sophomore Rok Gundaker placed first in Needham’s division at the ESLs and came in first place in three separate giant slalom races, qualifying him for states for the second year in a row.

Sophomore Jordyn Tobasky’s No. 20 overall individual finish at the ESLs earned her a spot as an alternate at the State Championship Meet.

Needham will now enjoy a week of rest and training before making the trek up to Wachusett Mountain on March 7. Congratulations to the Rocket skiers on an incredible season and best of luck in States.
