High School athletics return to Needham

Needham High School began the Fall I athletic season this past week, with athletes finally being granted an opportunity to play organized high school sports for the first time in nearly seven months.

The Fall I athletic season includes field hockey, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross-country and golf. Tryouts and practices took place at Memorial Field, Cricket Field and DeFazio Park, of course with all athletes staying socially distant and wearing masks.

With tryouts and practices underway, the plan is to start playing games the first week of October. Needham and all Bay State Conference teams will play conference-only games until the end of November, when the winter athletic season begins. There will not be a postseason or state tournament.
