The Medfield boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Westwood High on Thursday, April 4th, for their first road game of the season against the Wolverines. The Warriors delivered a strong performance, securing a win with a final score of 19-10 over Westwood. Tim Collins led the Medfield team with five goals and three assists. Braedon Sutton also made significant contributions, scoring four goals, while Ben Lusby added three goals to the team's tally. Additionally, Joe Bartolotta and Jack Commane each scored two goals, and Matt George, Jack Branca, and Gavin Marmai each contributed with one goal, further solidifying Medfield's victory and marking the team's second win of the season.
The MedLax boys started off the first half with great intensity and determination. In the first quarter, the team appeared focused and cohesive. Medfield scored first, taking an early 1-0 lead with 11:20 to go. However, Westwood would go on to score two back-to-back goals, giving them their only lead of the evening 2-1. Westwood’s control of the scoreboard was short-lived as Medfield netted four more goals, closing the first quarter 5-2. The Warriors continued their offensive domination in the second quarter, clinching nine more points. The boys displayed quick footwork, connected passes, and relied on one another around the net, closing the first half in the lead 14-3.
Heading into the second half, the Medfield boys seemed to have taken their foot off the gas pedal just as Westwood began pressing for more offensive opportunities. The Warriors capitalized on only two scoring opportunities, a stark difference from their outstanding second-quarter feat. Westwood took advantage of Medfield’s lull, scoring four goals, the bulk of their points throughout the game. Despite Westwood’s comeback attempt, Medfield continued to take charge, closing the quarter 16-7. The Warriors and the Wolverines each scored three more points in the fourth quarter, relying heavily on defense throughout the remaining time on the clock. Medfield triumphed over Westwood 19-10, securing the final score of the competition.
Head coach John Isaf reflected on the difference in play comparing the first and second half. “Great first half, not a great second half, it’s one of those things where you play really good first half, and show what you’re capable of and then we came out flat in the second half we have to learn from that. We were playing as a team, sharing the ball, knowing what we were doing, and in the second half we made more mistakes, maybe the guys were getting cold, and the stickwork wasn’t as clean as it was in the first half. Look as a first road game against Westwood, that’s a win for us and we’ll take it,” said Isaf.
The Warriors will host Hopkinton High on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 PM.
