Medfield’s U12 team won the District 11 Championship with a 4-2 victory over Canton last Friday night at Kelly Field in Norwood. Brett Nickerson opened the scoring with RBI single after Jimmy Chadwick led off with a double in the bottom of the first. Matt Donahue added to the scoring with a clutch single, knocking in two runs.
Medfield starting pitcher Sam Palmer was once again stellar in a big game, holding Canton batters hitless for 4+ innings before finally yielding one in the fifth. Jack Goodman slammed the door in the sixth, striking out the side with the bases loaded to secure the victory.
This is the third consecutive district championship for the core of the team coached by Mark Nickerson, Jim Chadwick, Eric Goodman, and Eric Baacke. The win advances the team to the final 16 in the state, with hopes of representing Massachusetts in the New England Championships. The New England winner moves on to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
The District win propels Medfield to the U12 State Tournament this week. At the time of printing, Medfield is scheduled to face Wellesley on Wednesday at 8 p.m., Medford on Thursday at 8 p.m., and Savin Hill on Friday at 5:30. All the games will take place at Gillis Park in Medford.
