The Medfield boys volleyball team split their home games last week, dropping 3-1 to Millis on April 26 and winning 3-0 against St. John’s High School on April 28.
Despite most of the team having gone without practice for a week, things started strongly for the Medfield boys against Millis. The team took a first set win, 25-21, with crisp passing and strong hits. The lack of practice time caught up to them, however, as Millis took the next three sets.
Jack Kornet led the way with 15 kills, followed by Matt Johnson with 11. Jack Madej had 7 kills in 9 attempts. Randall Miller was particularly successful in his 24 serves, resulting in a significant number of points. Jake Berger had 18 set assists with Jonathan Wong close behind with 12.
The team surged back two days later with a dominant 3-0 win over St. John’s High School. While not a perfect performance, the boys nonetheless flashed signs of their potential.
The attack was devastating at times, with Jack Kornet, Jack Madej and Matt Johnson making a number of kills. St. John’s played exceptionally hard, but succumbed to a strong Medfield attack that featured a number of successful jump serves by Randall Miller. Matt Averill, Liam McNulty, Tyler Wong and Travers Devlin were particular standouts for their passing. As always, Jake Berger and Jonathan Wong provided strong setting to lead their team to victory.
At the time of printing, the varsity boys are now 4-4 on the season, and are looking forward to home games against Xaverian and Nipmuc Regional High School this week.
