6th graders advance to championship tourney

The Medfield 6th Grade girls soccer team has advanced to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions.

After finishing the regular season with 8 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie, the girls earned the number one seed in the BAYS League playoffs. They beat Northboro in their first round game, 6-2. They advanced to play Brookline in their second round game. After losing key defender Finch Sullivan to a broken collarbone and being down 2-0, the girls rallied to tie the game in the second half. After two overtime periods with the game still tied, the girls advanced to the finals after winning the game with a shootout win.

The girls then faced a talented Arlington team in the finals. Despite falling behind twice, the girls again rallied in the second half and found themselves heading to overtime once again. After trading goals in overtime, the extra session came to end with the teams going to a shootout. A trip to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions was on the line.

With shootout goals by Bridget Deignan, Alexis Barton, Sarah Hedges and Mandy Glynn and great goaltending by Fia Flamand, the girls were victorious. They will open the State Tournament on Friday evening and continue round-robin play on Saturday.
