Fall sports have resumed with fervor, marking the commencement of an exciting season. In the past week, numerous teams took to the fields and courts to demonstrate the fruits of their labor during preseason. Many squads have initiated the season on a robust note, engaging in multiple daily practices. Athletes across disciplines have strived to surpass their limits, aiming to make an indelible impact and elevate this autumnal season to unprecedented heights. Among the teams, the Needham boys' soccer team stands out as one of the largest contingents at Needham High School, fielding four teams each season. For them, the preseason is a dedicated period of hard work and commitment to their passion for the sport.

On Thursday, August 24th, the Needham boys convened at DeFazio Fields for a scrimmage against King Phillip High. Although scrimmages don't carry the weight of official games in terms of scores, their significance is paramount. These practice matches offer coaches invaluable insights into players' optimal positions on the field and where their strengths can be maximized.

Heading the team for the ninth consecutive season is Coach James Odierna. With each passing year, the team has rallied behind a new motto that encapsulates the essence of the season. Past slogans like "Trust the process" and "Rise to the challenge" have guided the team. This year, Odierna and his captains have chosen the maxim "You get out what you put in."

Odierna elaborated, stating, "Success is a product of your complete dedication. If you desire a favorable outcome, you must consistently push yourself beyond your limits. Dedication and work ethic are paramount because nothing is bestowed without effort. It's a conscious decision—you reap what you sow, and you must earn it."

During the scrimmage, the collective commitment of each player was palpable as they exerted their utmost effort throughout the 20-minute quarters on a scorching summer day. Their resilience and determination were evident when the team orchestrated a three-goal comeback in the final quarter.

Throughout the regular season, the boys' team will pose a formidable challenge to their opponents. The Rockets have a packed schedule ahead, offering ample opportunities to witness their talents firsthand. As they dedicate every minute of each game, they edge closer to their championship aspirations.
