Westwood boys' lacrosse hosted Medfield High on Thursday, April 4th, for their third home game
of the season. The Wolverines staged a strong second-half comeback but fell short of victory
with a final score of 10-19. Max O’Brien and Troy Fredrickson led the Westwood team with two
goals each. Additionally, Jack Roycroft and Brendan Varnerin each scored a goal. Alongside
them, Sam Cochran, Liam Williams, Ryan Gaffney, and Ryan Pezzuto each contributed one
goal, further bolstering Westwood’s second-half resurgence.

The Medfield boys started the first half with great intensity and determination. In the opening
quarter, the team appeared focused and cohesive. Medfield took an early 1-0 lead with 11:20 to
go. However, Westwood scored two consecutive goals, briefly taking the lead 2-1. Medfield
responded with four more goals, ending the first quarter 5-2 in their favor. Despite Westwood's
defensive efforts in the second quarter, Medfield extended their lead with nine more points. The
half closed with Medfield leading by 11 points, 3-14.

In the second half, Medfield seemed to ease off, allowing Westwood to press for offensive
opportunities. Westwood capitalized on this, scoring four goals in the third quarter. However,
Medfield maintained control, ending the quarter 16-7. Both teams scored three points in the
fourth quarter, relying heavily on defense. The final score saw Medfield victorious over
Westwood, 19-10.

Head coach Todd Zahurak credited one of his captains, Brendan Varnerin, for rallying the team
in the second half and noted the adjustments made by the players that began to pay off as the
game progressed: “My captain Brendan Varnerin really took over and rallied the guys, he did a
great job at halftime. My defensive coordinator made a couple of adjustments and did a nice job
there. We had a couple of adjustments that really paid off for us,” said Zahurak.

The Wolverines travel to Canton High on Friday, April 12 at 6:30 PM for their fifth match of the
season.
