The snow played havoc with the performance schedule, but the Middle School Performing Arts Department managed to put on three shows of the family classic, “The Wizard of Oz,” with dozens of Needham students acting, singing, playing in the orchestra and working on the crew.
The premiere was forced back a day because of last Friday’s snow storm and this Monday’s make-up date had to be postponed for a night as well, but in the end the students took three packed houses on a ride down the yellow brick road.
“The show is amazing,” said Michael Ciccolella, who directed the play with Kate Jones.
“The kids have been working hard and it really is an amazing production.”
For this musical, the students added rear projection scenery that provided a new dimension to the stage at Pollard Middle School. Ciccolella praised his cast and crew as well as his fellow advisors, including several Needham High students, for working together to produce the show.
“It really has been a team effort directing this year’s show,” he said, “and I am extremely appreciative of all the adults (and many high school students as well) who have helped organize the kids in this endeavor.”
The crowds were appreciative of all the work and enjoyed the students’ take on a classic.
