Seeking to bring smiles and positivity to the residents of Needham, the local Needham Girls on the Run (GOTR) team recently donated a Community Impact Rock Garden to the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department. The Rock Garden is made up of nearly 60 rocks, hand-painted by the 15 girls on the team who participated in the fall season.
The garden is now on display at the flagpole at the new Parks and Recreation building on Rosemary Street.
The girls, ages 8-10, chose the Rock Garden as their Community Impact Project, a key component of the GOTR program, as a way to spread messages of positivity to the community.
“Seeing the inspiring messages of positivity that each girl shared through their creativity was truly amazing. The energy this rock garden emulates is sure to brighten anyone’s day,” said Team Head Coach and Girls on the Run Greater Boston Board Chair Ronit Velde.
Throughout GOTR, girls develop and improve physical, social, and emotional competence, while training for a 5K run over the course of ten weeks. When the girls learn these life skills, they can ultimately make a positive difference in their community and in society. The Community Impact Project, which they choose, design and implement, lets them put the skills they’ve learned to use, while contributing to community.
This fall, 15 girls from Needham and surrounding communities participated in Needham GOTR, and each girl successfully completed the 5K on December 2 in Medford.
The spring season of Needham GOTR will kick off the week of March 11 and will culminate with a celebratory 5K on June 2. Parents interested in registering their girls can learn more or sign up through the spring programming at Parks and Recreation.
