The Needham Free Public Library (NFPL) hosted an artist meet and greet with local artist Sarah Fuhro. Located in the Friends of the Needham Library Art Gallery on the second floor of the NFPL, Fuhro displayed an array of her incredible clay pieces she crafted herself.
This meet and greet was from 4pm to 6pm in which attendees could speak with Fuhro about her work and also grab some free ornaments she had created. These ornaments were in correlation with the ‘24 Lunar Calendar that she was additionally handing out for free. Each clay creation had a leaf from a tree that was dedicated to the cycles of each month, so those in attendance could pick their birth month.
These free gifts depict Fuhro’s inspiration when it comes to making art. Her artist statement went on to state, “My pottery is made from clay, from the Earth herself. The Moon is my guide, my teacher, and many of my pieces relate to the Moon and her cycles. Inspiration comes from the natural forms around me from woods and meadows where I walk, and from the sky. My bowls, plates, tiles are built the way I see plants grow. But I have to bring my inspiration into legible forms so they communicate well with those who look at them. I try to improve the craft of my art … I have to struggle with the process of clay, which means I wait to see what Water, Air and Fire will do to Earth over time and in the heat of the kiln. All of this to say : What I make is given to me as a gift, and I hope to share this gift with you.”
Displayed within both the large and small cabinets were Fuhro’s creations including a Fox Platter, Beaver Wand Tray, Angel Uriel Bowl, Pensive Hawk Tray, Musical Fox Wall Tile, Bird Lady Bowl, and more. All of these items were up for sale for those who found special interest in them.
Fuhro is a member of the Potters Shop and School located on Thorpe Street in Needham. Many of her Potters family came by to support her showing and absolutely raved about her work. One member exclaimed, “We absolutely love her work. We get to see her produce these wonderful things and she is just so creative with her craft. It’s such a joy to see.”
This was the reaction of all attendees who filtered in and out of this author meet and greet. Throughout the entirety of this event, Fuhro could be seen mingling with guests and feeling completely joyous of the admiration she was given for her work.
