The new spinoff in the X-Men franchise, “X-Men: New Mutants” began filming today at the former State Hospital grounds in Medfield. Small signs directing cast and crew to the State Hospital grounds have been spotted along Route 109 in Westwood and Medfield.

Director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) heads a team that reportedly includes cast members James McAvoy and Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the wildly popular Game of Thrones television series. The plot is rumored to revolve around the New Mutants, a new batch of heroes trained at Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

Other young stars reported to be in the project include Henry Zaga, who recently starred in the Netflix hit 13 Reasons Why and Charlie Heaton from the sci-fi hit series Stranger Things. Last week, Zaga posted a photo of the young stars in Boston on his Instagram page (right). Director, Josh Boone, also posted a cryptic photo with what appears to be the project's code name "Growing Pains", covertly displaying an "X" inside the logo of the popular 80's sitcom of the same name. The Medfield State Hospital grounds have played host to other productions in the past including “Shutter Island,” the Martin Scorsese’s thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio which filmed there in 2010.
