The Zullo Gallery Center for the Arts is one of the most underrated spaces in Medfield. Easy to miss, the Gallery lies across from the Library up a flight of stairs. While from the outside it may not look like much, once you enter the space, it is hard to imagine not knowing about it. Currently, the gallery is holding an exhibit titled “Unique Impressions IV” by the Monotype Guild of New England. This exhibit began on November 12 and will continue to be in place until January 7.

The Monotype Guild of New England is a “national, nonprofit organization that fosters understanding and appreciation of monotypes and monoprints.” A monotype is made by drawing or painting on a smooth surface and transferring the image to a sheet of paper. A monoprint contains lines or images that can be repeated exactly, from one impression to the next, such as etched lines, a carved woodblock or a lithographic drawing. The artist varies the inking in each image creating a unique impression. The tools used to create these types of works include paint brushes, beach grasses, q-tips and human fingertips – they are virtually endless. “Unique prints are sometimes enhanced by the artist with collage materials or direct drawing or painting on the printed surface.” Each work in the exhibit speaks for itself and creates a lasting impression.

The Zullo Gallery hosts more than just exhibits, but also live music and art education including art classes for children and adults. The Gallery is currently undergoing a renovation, which, when completed, will include a café. The Gallery believes that “no town should run a deficit of inspiration. When the cultural life of a town thrives, so much more thrives too.” Created originally by the Medfield Council on the Arts, the gallery helps promote diverse voices and experiences, as well as imagination and aspirations.
