The award-winning Medfield High School Jazz Band is off to Cuba in April, and two local businesses have jumped on board to help the band with fundraising by selling tickets for the Friday, Feb. 3 event, ¡Hola Cuba! and providing other means of support.
“We’re particularly excited about the Feb. 3 event, which will showcase the Jazz Band performing many of the Latin pieces it will play on the trip. The night will also feature salsa dancing and a Cuban dinner,” said Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen, who is spearheading the trip that includes 23 MHS Jazz Band members, chaperones, and guest artist Angel Subero.
A limited number of tickets for the much-anticipated Feb. 3 event, to be held in the St. Edward’s gym, are $65 per person and can be purchased in person during the normal business hours at the Rib Joint located in the North Meadows Road plaza, and Park Street Books on Main Street. Checks should be made payable to Medfield Music Association. Tickets are also available online via medfieldmusicassociation.com (a surcharge applies).
In addition to providing ticket-selling support, the Rock ‘N Roll Rib Joint will also be backing the Cuba trip by donating $1 from every Cuban sandwich sold during the month of January, and host live music performed by members of the MHS Jazz Band (performance dates to be announced) when they can collect donations.
Jim James, founder of Park Street Books, also looks forward to hosting members of the Jazz Band and other student musicians at the store after construction of the new deck is complete this spring.
“Music like books is something that all ages can enjoy, and we are fortunate to have an abundance of musical talent right here in Medfield,” said James.
In addition to the Rib Joint and Park Street Books, Blue Moon and Lovell’s recently supported the MHS Jazz Band fundraising efforts. The Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization (MEMO) unofficially kicked off the Cuba trip fundraising campaign with a $500 contribution at Medfield Day this past September.
