The Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization (MEMO) held its annual holiday parade. Despite the frigid weather, crowds gathered along the parade route to enjoy the festive kickoff to the season. “We’re ready for it!” exclaimed one onlooker, with her young kids in tow. “We’re in layers, plus of course we’ve got the winter coats, mittens and hats. But we’d be here no matter what, this parade is such a highlight of the season for us.”
Promptly at 1:00 p.m. the parade began, beginning at the high school/middle school. It then proceeded from Pound Street up South Street to Route 109, and then down to Park Street. From Park, it continued down Oak Street, then on to Pleasant Street, to Metacomet Street, and back to the school grounds.
In addition to the police cars and fire trucks at the beginning of the parade, which are always a big hit with the kids, this year’s event featured the Medfield High School marching band and area dance studios showcasing their talent. There were also several beautifully decorated floats sponsored by local organizations, as well as the Lions Club, with the Eyemobile in tow. Many scout troops were also in attendance, most of them in creatively coordinating costumes such as snowflakes, reindeers, gingerbread, elves, and a colorful candy theme. Delighted children lining the parade route were thrilled to receive sweet treats from the cheerful scouts as they walked by, some keeping track of the number they received. “This is my fourth candy cane!” one shouted to a friend across the street, who was also holding a small handful.
The parade concluded with a bright red and white MEMO float that held none other than Santa and Mrs. Claus, who waved enthusiastically to the crowds. They were joined by their elf helpers, who had won their place in front of Mr. and Mrs. Claus at the tree lighting the evening prior.
Season’s Greetings to all from the Hometown Weekly.
