A few years ago, Medfield resident David Gingrich dedicated his time and that of a crew of workers from the tree service company for which he works, Hartney Greymont in Needham, to fix trees that were located on Adams St. in front of Dale Street School, which his son attended at the time.
Last week, Gingrich donated more time to the Medfield community as a crew of two workers climbed red maples on the edge of Hinkley Pond to trim dead branches and prune the tree.
With one worker in a bucket and the other strapped onto the trunk of the tree, they discarded a number of branches that Gingrich said had the potential to cause injury during the summer swim season.
“There’s a lot of dead wood in them and there’s a lot of kids at the pond and parents and families congregate around and under those two maples,” he explained in a phone message last week.
Gingrich’s son has been a member of the Medfield Marlins, Medfield Recreation’s summer swim program, for the past few years and Gingrich saw this as an opportunity to assist the town and give back to a program with a connection to his family.
He approached Medfield Tree Warden Ed Hinkley about the project and got the go-ahead to take care of the trees.
“For safety and health I thought it would be a great donation back to the community,” Gingrich explained.
The crew worked through the morning and had a sizeable pile of branches at the foot of the tree, which thankfully will not be falling on children or families making use of the pond this summer.
