The Medfield Council on Aging is extraordinarily well attended. Weekly events, special talks, and outstanding opportunities draw in community members from all over the town. One way The Center shows their appreciation is through a monthly birthday party celebrating those who have birthdays during the month, but also providing a festive environment and occasion for anyone who may wish to attend.
Robert Lynch, Director of the Council on Aging, said, “We’ve been doing this for six or seven years. We usually get 40 to 50 people.” The event offers more than a simple birthday celebration. “The event revolves around the birthday lunch - and today it’s hot dogs - and singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to everyone who is celebrating their birthday,” she explained. “Then birthday cake, and then we have entertainment from about 12:15 to just a little after 1:00.” Before lunch was served, each person with a January birthday was given a string of beads to differentiate them. Smiles and cheers were present at all tables and on all faces.
The entertainment varies each month, but this time, Jeff Jarvis was helping out. “He has been with us for about six years, coming in and out at different times,” Lynch said. “He does the summer cookouts, he does birthday parties, he’s done our Supper Club as well.”
Jarvis describes his entertainment as a variety show. “I play a little Bee Gees, some Elton John, Bobby Darin, et cetera. I also play Elvis. I’m kind of known for that, but keep it on the down low,” he said. “You wear a jumpsuit one time!” He joked.
Those present were mostly from Medfield, however, there were a few guests from out of town. “We have two people who might be celebrating their birthday, and people come for the music, for the socialization,” Lynch elaborated. “It’s a good reason to get people out of the house. It’s a fun time, it’s always good to eat, and the music is great. Music makes everyone feel wonderful.”
