Superintendent Jeffrey J. Marsden and Blake Middle School Principal Nat Vaughn take great pride in the school's enduring commitment to fostering a strong sense of community and instilling essential values in their students. One notable testament to this commitment is the school's annual tradition, which was once again joyfully upheld this year—the invitation extended to local veterans to engage with the inquisitive minds of sixth-graders.
Earlier this month, in commemoration of Veterans Day, Blake Middle School warmly welcomed eleven esteemed local veterans who graciously shared their wealth of experiences with the eager students. The assembly of veterans included distinguished individuals from various branches of the armed forces, each bringing a unique perspective and a wealth of stories to impart. Among them were Navy veterans Jim Aldinger, Sam Brand, Tony Centore, and Paul Galofaro; Air Force veterans Ron Griffin and Bill Hajjar; Army veterans Gerry Irwin, Ray Neary, and Dean Putnam; Army National Guard veteran Tom Sweeney; Coast Guard veteran Jim Mankus; and Marine veteran Jim Walsh.
During this insightful engagement, the veterans generously offered their time to answer questions posed by the sixth-graders, providing a firsthand account of their experiences in service to the nation. The stories shared by these esteemed guests served not only to educate but also to inspire the students, offering profound lessons in courage, resilience, and the spirit of selfless service.
As the engaging Q&A session concluded, the bonds forged between the veterans and the students were further strengthened over a convivial lunch. Held in the welcoming atmosphere of the school's library, this post-Q&A gathering saw the veterans joining sixth-grade class representatives and teachers for a delightful meal, fostering a sense of camaraderie and gratitude.
Principal Vaughn expressed his enthusiasm for this cherished tradition, stating, "We are delighted to welcome local veterans each year. Their visit provides our sixth-graders with invaluable lessons in courage, resilience, and service, and allows our students and staff to make positive community connections."
This annual event not only enriches the educational experience of the students but also reinforces the school's dedication to nurturing responsible, compassionate citizens who appreciate the sacrifices made by those who have served in the defense of freedom. The impact of such initiatives resonates not only within the walls of the school but also within the broader community, as these connections contribute to a richer tapestry of understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices made by our veterans.
