Word’s out that a Chipotle Mexican Grill is coming to Medfield Shops on Route 109.
“We are currently planning to open a location in Medfield at some point this winter,” said Sally Evans, External Communications of Chipotle corporate headquarters in Newport Beach, CA. “Those are the only details I have to share right now.”
The news of the chain coming to town appears to be meeting mixed reviews thus far, with some folks enthusiastic about it on social media, and others concerned about traffic and building aesthetics. Currently there is one online petition with 30 signatures that is calling to stop the project altogether.
Chipotle was founded by Steve Ells, a former line cook for celebrity chef Jeremiah Tower. Ells took what he had learned from the chef and from his experience at Tower’s San Francisco restaurant, and opened the first Chipotle in 1993 near the University of Denver. He had borrowed money from his father to open the store, and they both calculated that just over 100 burritos would have to be sold per day for the restaurant to be profitable. Within a month, more than 1,000 burritos were sold daily. Today there are over 3,000 Chipotle locations worldwide.
