Eighth-grader Jack Worcester has won the Dover-Sherborn Middle School section of the National Geographic Bee. At an all-school assembly on Dec. 23, Jack won in the championship round by correctly identifying Norway as the country that administers the Svalbard archipelago in the Barents Sea. It was the most exciting final in many years, as it took ten sudden-death tiebreaker questions to defeat runner-up Aisling Sharpe, a seventh-grader.

Jack will now take a written exam to determine if he qualifies to advance to the Massachusetts Geographic Bee, which will be held on March 31 at Elms College in Chicopee.

Out of 550 participants in grades 6-8 classroom bees in November, the other eight DSMS finalists were 8th-graders Macie Tanaka, Emma Charity, and Eli Kaplan; 7th-graders Calden Bates (3rd-place), and Robert Ozerdem; and 6th-graders Zach Jaffe, Theo Gleason and Piotr Szymanski.
