The Boggestow Garden Club of Sherborn has invited the community to join them at their September 5 meeting, which will take place at Unity Farm and Sanctuary at 17 Unity Lane in Sherborn. Participants will be given a guided tour of this new and expanding farm and the sanctuary where aging ponies and other animals are provided loving care in beautiful surroundings for the rest of their lives. The tour will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the new flagpole bearing the Sanctuary flag designed by Kathy Halamka.
Unity Lane leaves Rt. 27 in Sherborn next to the railroad tracks. Keep left on the Lane. Park in a single row around the circle and as directed. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 on the porch of the sanctuary building. There is no cost.
The Sanctuary is the work of Kathy and John Halamka, an amazingly tireless and enterprising couple who farm the adjacent property according to organic principles. They are deep into harvesting their crops of fruits and vegetables, garlic, shitake mushroom and honey from 40 hives that produced 1000 pounds this year. Fall crops are being planted and hard cider is coming up. Meanwhile, 20 volunteers join them to help feed, bathe, exercise, socialize and medicate all the inhabitants of the sanctuary. Besides the ponies, inhabitants include a Vietnamese potbellied pig, a magnificent turkey, a donkey, many grouse and other animals including wild creatures who wander through the property somehow knowing that they will be safe there.
Kathy Halamka, President of the Boggestow Garden Club, will conduct the tour, conveying to members and guests a sense of the great joy and enthusiasm she and John have for the opportunity to provide a few very fortunate animals a healthy and restful retirement.
Participants should wear appropriate shoes for walking on unpaved surfaces and insect repellent if they wish.
