This past weekend, the Dover-Sherborn Middle School Drama Program presented their spring production of “An Evening of One-Act Comedy” featuring the plays “This is a Test” by Stephen Gregg, “The Taming of LaRue” by LR Karcz, and “Gary Grinkle’s Battle with Wrinkles and Other Troubles in Mudgeville” by Stefan Lanfer.
The show, performed at the Sherborn Community Center, was produced by Dover-Sherborn High School Drama director Carmel Bergeron. Each play was tackled by a student director from the junior class at DSHS.
The first performance of the night was “This is a Test,” which tells the story of Alice, played by Jordan Pfeifer, who has barely studied for her midterm, never got the review sheets, whose teacher does not like her, and whose classmates are blatantly cheating.
The play was chosen and directed by DSHS junior Elizabeth Owen, who has been actively involved in the drama program since she was in middle school.
“I was directed by a high school junior when I was in eighth grade and it was such a fun experience,” Owen said. “I always thought that she was so much older than me, and now three years later I’ve taken her place, which is crazy. It’s been such a learning experience, getting to direct and be on the other side. It’s such a great way to get to know the younger kids, and it’s been so much fun.”
The second performance was “The Taming of LaRue” a Western retelling of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.”
This play was directed by DSHS junior Emmanuelle Fried, who picked the show because of its more easily understandable telling of one of her favorite satirical Shakespeare plays.
“I’ve always been onstage,” Fried said, “So it’s been really cool to see the other side and what it’s like to organize all the kids and watch them blossom and show talent I didn’t know they had.”
The night ended with “Gary Grinkle’s Battle with Wrinkles and Other Troubles in Mudgville,” a story told in the style of Dr. Seuss with a cast of wacky characters with even wackier problems.
